European cross-border e-commerce reached €358.7 billion according to Cross-Border Commerce Europe, growing 10% year on year. The opportunity is huge, and so are the traps. Here, condensed into five principles, is what more than ten years of international e-commerce have taught us.
1. Translation isn't enough
A translated website is not a localised business model. According to CSA Research, 40% of consumers never buy in a foreign language, and search intent doesn't translate: it has to be rediscovered market by market. Get to know your local audience and its words before spending your first advertising pound. More on this in our article on translation vs localisation.
2. Build the engine room first
Site structure (country domain or subdirectory), hreflang tags, local payment methods, target-country VAT, per-market tracking: all of it comes before advertising. The Baymard Institute attributes 10% of cart abandonments to missing payment methods and 21% to slow delivery. These are structural leaks no marketing budget can compensate.
3. Think in your customer's journey: found, vetted, bought
In a new market you start from zero at every stage: visibility in the local language (SEO and GEO), trust signals (local reviews, compliant legal pages, local citations), and a buying experience up to the country's standards. You can lose your customer at any of the three stages, so you have to build all three.
4. Global mission, local message
Your mission doesn't change from country to country. The way you talk about it does. Define the non-negotiable brand core at headquarters and hand the adaptation to people who genuinely know the market. Too much centralisation makes you blind; too much local freedom dilutes the brand. We covered the three organisational models in detail.
5. Take cultural details seriously
Formal or informal address, invoice payment in Germany, iDEAL in the Netherlands, national promotional calendars: these "details" decide conversion as much as your product does. Cultural localisation is not a comfort option, it is a condition of profitability.
Keep these five principles for your next expansion meeting. And if you want to apply them to your specific situation, that is exactly what our free initial consultation at LDMM Agency is for.
