ccTLD, Subdirectory or Subdomain: Which Domain Structure for International SEO?
yourshop.de, yourshop.com/de/ or de.yourshop.com? Advantages, drawbacks and a decision rule for structuring your multilingual website for international SEO.

It is one of the first technical decisions of an expansion, and one of the most underestimated: where will your new language version live? There are three options, and the choice commits your SEO, your budget and your new customers' trust for years.
Option 1: the country domain (ccTLD)
A domain like yourshop.de sends the strongest possible local signal, to Google and to visitors alike. For a German consumer, a .de site with a complete Impressum inspires immediate trust. The trade-off: this domain starts with zero SEO authority. All the backlinks and credibility your main domain has accumulated are of no use to it. You will need to rebuild, with the budget and patience that implies, and maintain several domains in parallel.
Option 2: the subdirectory
With yourshop.com/de/, every new market inherits the authority of your main domain: every backlink feeds one single SEO asset. Management is centralised and costs are contained. In exchange, the address feels less local, and you will need to invest more in the other trust signals: local customer reviews, mentions in local media, customer service in the local language.
Option 3: the subdomain
de.yourshop.com looks like a compromise but tends to combine the drawbacks: Google often treats it as a separate site, without inherited authority, and it still doesn't send the local signal of a true country domain. Unless a specific technical constraint forces your hand, we advise against it in most cases.
Our decision rule for domain strategy
Few priority markets and a genuine long-term investment in each? The country domain earns its keep. Several markets to cover on a controlled budget? The subdirectory is almost always the best effort-to-result ratio.
Whichever option you choose, technical implementation makes the difference: correct hreflang tags telling Google which version serves which market, localised metadata, consistent URLs. A mistake at this level costs visibility silently, every single day, with no error message.
The right choice depends on your situation: number of markets, budget, horizon. It is a decision we prepare with our clients at LDMM Agency, with data on the table, before anything goes live.
