Ecommerce Platform Comparison 2026

Which Website Builder Fits Your European Store?

Choosing an eCommerce platform is one of the most consequential decisions you'll make for your online store and one of the most expensive to reverse. Migrating a catalog, SEO structure, and integrations a year or two in can cost tens of thousands of euros and cause a real, if temporary, dip in organic traffic. This is especially true if you're selling across multiple European countries, where language, currency, tax, and hosting requirements add extra layers of complexity. Here's how the leading platforms stack up for brands building or scaling an eCommerce presence in Europe in 2026.

The European Landscape

Unlike the US, where a couple of platforms dominate the conversation, Europe's ecommerce platform landscape is genuinely fragmented by country. Germany has its own strong domestic player in Shopware, which leads among the country's highest-revenue B2C shops thanks to its B2B features and native EU hosting. France produced PrestaShop, a CMS built specifically for ecommerce that remains the reference point for large catalogs and marketplace connectivity. Meanwhile, Shopify and WooCommerce compete for new store launches across nearly every European market, and BigCommerce and Adobe Commerce serve larger, more complex catalogs regardless of country.

For a brand expanding across several EU markets, this fragmentation matters: the "best" platform in Germany isn't necessarily the best one for France or the Benelux region.

Comparison Table: Platforms at a Glance

The Main Platforms in Detail

Shopify The fastest way to a fully functional, multi-market store: hosted, secure, with an app ecosystem of over 8,000 integrations and native AI features for product descriptions, customer service, and personalization. Shopify's multi-currency and multi-language tools have matured significantly, making it a solid choice for brands launching simultaneously across several European countries. One caveat for European sellers: while the interface is localized, support is largely English-language, and you should explicitly confirm which data center region your store runs on if EU hosting matters for your compliance requirements.

Shopware The leading platform among Germany's highest-revenue B2C shops, and a strong choice anywhere DACH is a priority market. Particularly strong for B2B functionality, custom backend workflows, and native EU/GDPR-aligned hosting via Shopware Cloud. The free Community Edition requires your own hosting and technical resources; commercial plans (Rise, Evolve, Beyond) scale by annual GMV and start in the mid-hundreds of euros per month. The trade-off is higher agency and implementation costs in exchange for deep control and strong trust with German B2B buyers.

PrestaShop Built in France specifically for ecommerce rather than adapted from a general-purpose CMS. Remains the reference point for large catalogs (1,000+ products), multi-store setups, and — notably — marketplace connectivity: PrestaShop stores connect to marketplaces at roughly double the rate of Shopify stores. A strong fit if France or Southern Europe is a core market and you expect to sell across multiple marketplaces alongside your own site. Requires more technical investment upfront than a SaaS platform.

WooCommerce A free WordPress plugin offering full ownership of code and data, popular across every European market for merchants already running WordPress or building a content-and-SEO-led strategy. You control every technical detail — page speed, URL structure, schema markup — but you're also responsible for hosting (choose an EU-based provider for GDPR peace of mind), security, and maintenance as your catalog grows.

BigCommerce Positioned for mid-market brands with complex catalogs, B2B pricing needs, or high sales volume who want to avoid Shopify-style transaction fees. Strong native multi-currency support and broad payment gateway coverage make it a reasonable option for pan-European sellers, though its design flexibility lags behind Shopify's.

Adobe Commerce (Magento) The most powerful option technically, with deep customization for complex, multi-brand, or multi-region setups, but usually overkill, and over-budget, without a dedicated development team to manage hosting, security, and ongoing development.

What Matters for a Pan-European Rollout

If you're selling or planning to sell across more than one European country, prioritize these three factors over general "best platform" rankings:

  1. Domain strategy — ccTLDs, subdirectories, or subdomains handle international SEO very differently, and platforms vary in how cleanly they support each option. (See our guide on domain strategy for multilingual sites.)

  2. Local payment methods and tax logic — checkout expectations differ sharply by country: Klarna and SEPA direct debit matter in Germany, Bancontact in Belgium, and VAT/OSS rules apply differently depending on where you're shipping from and to. (See our article on international checkout and payment methods.)

  3. Hosting location — for GDPR compliance and page speed within the EU, confirm your hosting region explicitly; it's not automatically EU-based on every "international" SaaS platform.

Total Cost of Ownership

Sticker price rarely reflects the real cost of running a multi-market store:

  • SaaS platforms (Shopify, Shopware Cloud): Predictable monthly costs, minimal hidden IT overhead, but ongoing subscription fees for the life of the store.

  • Open-source platforms (WooCommerce, PrestaShop, Magento): Low or no license fees, but hosting, premium themes, extensions, and agency support add up — a full PrestaShop implementation with an agency typically runs €5,000–25,000, and Shopware setups with agency support can range from €5,000 to €120,000/year depending on scale.

  • Localization costs regardless of platform, budget separately for translation (or trans-creation), local payment integrations, and market-specific compliance work when expanding beyond your home market.

Our Take

There's no universal "best" platform, only the best fit for your markets and resources:

  • Launching fast across multiple countries, no dev team: Shopify

  • Germany/DACH priority, B2B focus: Shopware

  • France/Southern Europe priority, large catalog, marketplace-heavy strategy: PrestaShop

  • Existing WordPress site, content-led SEO strategy: WooCommerce

  • Complex catalog, B2B needs, no transaction fees: BigCommerce

  • Enterprise scale, dedicated dev team: Adobe Commerce
