Native Language E-commerce Statistics: Why 40% of Shoppers Will Never Buy From You

Imagine closing your shop to 40% of your visitors before they have even seen your products. That is exactly what happens when a brand enters a new market without a local language version.
The language statistics that belong in every business plan
The reference study on the subject comes from CSA Research, which surveyed 8,709 consumers in 29 countries. Two findings deserve a place on your office wall: 76% of online shoppers prefer to buy products with information in their native language. And 40% simply never buy from websites in any other language.
In other words, every market you enter with English-only content is a market where nearly half of your potential buyers are gone before your marketing has even started working. No ad campaign, however well optimised, makes up for that starting handicap.
Language is a conversion factor, not a formality
Many companies treat the language version as a box to tick at the end of a project. That gets the hierarchy wrong: language shapes every step of the buying journey. In Google search, where an English product description simply doesn't rank for German queries. On the product page, where clumsily translated specifications raise doubts about quality. In customer reviews, which a German buyer wants to read in German. All the way to customer service, where an English-only hotline signals to the market that it isn't a priority.
One important nuance: the preference for one's native language doesn't disappear with English proficiency. Even shoppers who speak fluent English convert better in their own language. Reading comfort builds trust, and trust builds conversion.
Translate locally, not literally
A word of caution: a language version does not mean a literal translation. Spanish for Spain is not Spanish for Mexico, and German translated word for word from English is spotted instantly. Proper linguistic localisation means vocabulary validated by native speakers who know the market, not just the language. The same logic applies to your keyword research, which should never be translated either.
That is exactly how we work at LDMM Agency: we write and adapt content in German, English, French, Spanish and Italian, using the codes of each market. Let's discuss your next language version in a free consultation.
Let's build something great together.
