GEO isn't a language issue. Until it is.

Most GEO guides are written with English in mind and treat international aspects as an afterthought, if at all. For brands selling in multiple languages, that's not enough.

International GEO guide

Just like with classic internationalization, GEO follows the same rule: translating alone isn't enough. This is the part of our work that matters most to us as a multilingual agency, and it's the part most GEO guides simply skip.

AI usage varies by market

How much ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews get used for information search varies noticeably from market to market. A user in Germany still relies on classic Google search more often than one in France or the US, while AI-powered search is growing fast across every market.

If you're thinking internationally, track which AI systems actually matter in each target market, rather than assuming one global pattern from your home market applies everywhere.

Language versions need their own GEO structure

A literally translated FAQ section doesn't automatically answer the questions people actually ask in another language. Just like with keyword research, the questions an AI in France or Italy is trying to answer need to be researched in that target market, not carried over from your English content.

There's a technical layer to this too, and it's easy to miss: language models aren't equally well-trained in every language, and their knowledge isn't equally current everywhere. Non-English content benefits especially from clear structure, precise facts, and clean markup, because it already has a harder time being well represented in a model's training and retrieval data.

Central standards, local execution

The same organizing principle that works for international brand management applies to GEO: headquarters defines structural standards, formats, and quality criteria for citable content. The actual execution, especially choosing the right questions and phrasing, belongs with people who genuinely understand the market.

That's also why our market analyses at LDMM Agency never come from translated data. They come from people who actually understand the language, the search behavior, and the local nuances of each market.

Treat every market as its own project

Once you've built solid GEO for your first target market, resist the urge to just copy it as a template. Treat GEO in every new target market as its own project, not a side effect of translation. Regularly test with realistic questions in the local language whether and how your brand shows up in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI in that market.
