Content AI actually cites: the right formats
Two nearly identical product pages. One with nice flowing prose, the other also has a clear FAQ section and a comparison table. Guess which one shows up in AI answers.

Not every piece of content is equally suited to showing up in a ChatGPT or Perplexity answer. Certain formats are systematically favored by language models because they translate easily into an answer. In our GEO work with clients, it's usually the same five formats that make the difference.
Five formats with high citation odds
Clear definitions come first: "what is" explanations that capture a term precisely in one or two sentences tend to get picked up directly by AI systems. Sprawling paraphrases, less so.
Comparison tables that line up options against the same criteria are especially easy to extract, because the structure has already pre-sorted the information.
Step-by-step guides with numbered, self-contained steps work for the same reason: the structure makes the information machine-readable without losing meaning.
Data points and statistics with a source and year noticeably increase citation odds. A concrete, sourced number gives an AI something tangible to work with; a vague claim doesn't.
FAQ sections that pick up real search questions and answer them directly round out the picture. They answer exactly the kind of question people also ask ChatGPT or Perplexity.
Authority doesn't only come from your own website
AI systems also weigh mentions on third-party sites: trade media, comparison platforms, industry directories, forums. Platforms like Reddit are used strikingly often as a source by several AI systems, because they're seen as authentic, unfiltered opinion.
A mention there can work for AI visibility much like a backlink does for classic SEO. Authority matters beyond individual mentions, too. High-authority domains are cited 2.5× more often by AI systems than low-authority domains, according to SE Ranking. (Source: SE Ranking, 2026) Relying only on your own website means leaving an important lever untouched.
Freshness as a quiet trust signal
A visible publish or update date, named authors with recognizable expertise, and regularly maintained content all signal trustworthiness, to readers and language models alike. The impact of freshness is measurable: content updated within the last three months receives 2× as many AI citations on average as outdated pages, 6 citations versus 3.6. Quarterly updates are therefore a useful benchmark for content that needs to remain competitive in generative search. (Source: SE Ranking, 2026) A blog post with no date or author feels less reliable to both, even if the content itself is solid.
For internationally minded brands, there's another layer: the right formats don't help if the underlying keyword research was only ever done for the home market. Even citable content has to address the questions actually being asked in the target market.
